Top 5 things you need to know about traveling to Sweden

So, you’re thinking about traveling to Sweden? We’re not surprised—it’s a pretty great place. Whether you want to feel the vibe of the largest city in Scandinavia, ski the slopes in the north or explore the stunning landscapes, you’ve come to the right place.

You might have some questions. When and where should you go? What do you need to bring and how long should you stay

We’ll guide you through everything you need to know before your trip to Sweden.

When should I travel to Sweden?

No matter if spring, summer, fall, or winter is your favorite season, Sweden has something for you. Most people want to travel to Sweden during the summer, as it brags of perfect weather for exploring the great outdoors and Midsummer—the biggest party of the year.

Spring and fall have cooler temperatures, but are still great seasons, where you get to see Sweden as it comes alive again after the long winter or dressed up in fire-colored leaves. Just don’t forget to bring a jacket.

Last, but not least, Swedish winter is cold and dark… but beautiful. When the country is covered in snow, it’s the perfect time to have a fika (a Swedish coffee break) in a cozy, toasty café or gear up for skiing and other winter sports.

Where in Sweden should I go?

Most tourists who go to Sweden view Stockholm as an obvious place to start, where you can go island hopping around the archipelago or explore the narrow alleys of the Old Town

Other cities to check out are laid-back Gothenburg, the university city Uppsala or Malmö, with its vibrant nightlife.

The island Gotland is the perfect destination for history buffs. Finally, ski resorts, Sami culture and Northern Lights await you in the north.

What documents do I need to travel to Sweden?

Naturally, another topic that pops up when planning a trip to Sweden is visa requirements. If you plan to go for 90 days or less, there’s a chance you can travel to Sweden without getting a visa at all.

On the Swedish government webpage, you can find the list of the countries who do need a visa before entering Sweden

If you happen to be a resident of one of those countries, and you need an entry visa, you will generally need to have:

  • A passport which was issued in the last ten years, has at least two empty pages, and is valid for at least three months after your visa expires
  • Enough money to support yourself and your travel home
  • A comprehensive medical travel insurance which covers 30 000 EUR and is valid in Schengen
  • A photo in passport format taken within the last six months

You will also have to describe the purpose of your visit to Sweden and show your intention to leave Schengen on the last day before your visa expires.
