How to study in Sweden?

Most students who move to Sweden to study will fall into one of the following three categories: exchange student, studying as an adult, or language student. 

Becoming an exchange student is likely the most convenient way of studying in Sweden. Applying and getting accepted is easier, and most arrangements are made through your program. In many cases, exchange students don’t pay a tuition fee, as many programs work as a scholarship to study in Sweden

If an exchange program is not for you, you can study as an adult and apply for a course yourself. If you’re specifically interested in learning Swedish, another option might be studying in Sweden as a language student.  

 

Who can study in Sweden?

Almost anyone can study in Sweden! If you’re from the EU/EEA, there are no visa requirements, and perhaps more importantly – studying is free.  

If you’re from a country outside the EU/EEA, you’ll likely need a student visa and need to be ready to pay tuition. How much does studying in Sweden cost? Tuition fees generally range between 80,000 and 295,000 SEK a year. This is approximately 7,671–28,287 USD or 7,090–26,144 EUR. 


Where to study in Sweden?

The bigger cities such as Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö are popular options for foreign students, but they’re far from the only options. 

Some great student cities in Sweden are Uppsala (only 40 minutes by train from Stockholm), Lund (almost half of its citizens are students at Lund University), and Umeå (only 400 km from the Arctic circle).
